Book Club: Paradise Lost

10:00 AM - 11:30 AM
Central Library
Galleria West Meeting Room

Central Library’s Reading Group and Notable Books are joining forces to conquer John Milton’s epic poem Paradise Lost. Readers will meet seven times to discuss each part of the poem. In addition, three English professors will present on topics relevant to the classic work about the “Fall of Man.” The 17th-century epic poem retells the biblical story of fallen angel Satan and the expulsion of Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden.

We'll prepare for our journey with two supplemental reading selections: Milton's essay "Aeropagitica" (available via the library and online) and a section of History of England by Laurence Larson. These will be discussed at the first meeting on May 26.

Beginning June 9 we'll focus on the book. We'll break it up into six sections and meet to discuss each section. We are using Modern Library's reader-friendly edition of Paradise Lost

Reading Group Dates (10:00 AM unless noted *)

  • May 26: Session #1 "Areopagitica" and History of England (both online)
  • June 9: Session #2 Paradise Lost, Book I
  • June 30: Session #3 Paradise Lost, Books II-III
  • July 21: Session #4 Paradise Lost, Books IV-V
  • August 4: Session #5 Paradise Lost, Books VI-VIII
  • August 25: Session #6 Paradise Lost, Book IX
  • *September 8: Session #7 Paradise Lost, Books X-XII (3:00 PM)

Professor Presentation Dates (3:00 PM)
