Via Zoom, the Preservation Chair of the Sacramento Art Deco
Society, Bruce Marwick, will be telling the compelling story of Ralph Stackpole
(1885-1973), a sculptor, painter, and muralist. From humble beginnings in
Oregon, Stackpole attended Ecole de Beaux-Arts in Paris after the San Francisco
Earthquake and Fire. He returned to San Francisco in 1908 where he began his
long and notable art career. Stackpole’s artistic legacy includes four public
art pieces in Sacramento. Stackpole was also a friend of Diego Rivera and an
early champion of the artist’s work in the 1920s.
